JB3-1John Britton is a performer, director, improviser and writer who has worked with experimental theater, opera, dance, story-telling, circus and many other varieties of theater. He is the artistic director of the international performers collaborative Duende, and the lead author and editor of Encountering Ensemble, published by Bloomsbury/Methuen. His Celebration Barn workshop (July 28-August 2), Self With Others, is focused on developing the individual within the ensemble.

I got to meet and Skype with John while he was teaching a workshop in Chennai, India. We started by talking about one of his fundamental exercises called “The Ball Game”.

JB: The ball work is very interesting because it always works. People are transformed by it. The ball is just a way without opinion, without content, without narrative, of passing energy from one person to another. It’s just an act of communication.
